However, Bixby, which was unveiled earlier this year by Samsung, is now available in more than 200 countries and recognizes U.S. English and Korean. The release date for India is still unknown.

Bixby is Samsung's answer to Amazon Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant. "The expansion of Bixby's voice capabilities is an initial step in the continued rollout of Bixby functionality".

In July the Wall Street Journal reported that a Samsung smart speaker was being developed; however, two weeks later the Korea Herald, also speaking with anonymous sources, said the project had been shelved because Samsung did not believe there was enough money in smart speakers.

"In the future, Bixby will have the learning power to offer more intelligent and personalized interactions and seamless connections across more devices", he added. The new details confirmed by Samsung come in line with a previous report that claimed the company is working on a smart speaker, but the progress had been held back by the company's inability to roll-out the US English language version of Bixby in more countries.

Users with Samsung Galaxy S8 or S8 Plus phones can activate the AI by holding the dedicated Bixby buttons on their devices or simply saying, "Hi, Bixby". However, Bixby has launched globally and it has been confirmed at the Unpacked event that Samsung are in fact working on a smart speaker powered by the personal assistant.

This isn't the first we've heard about a potential Bixby-powered smart speaker.
