Help People Affected by Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey hit the Houston area on Sunday sparking a flash flood emergency throughout Texas.

People watching from the rest of the world may feel helpless, but there are ways to get involved and help the victims of this massive storm.

The Red Cross said the best way to help is to donate money.

The company is collecting donations in $5, $10, $25, $50, $100, and $200 increments, with all of the proceeds going to help the Red Cross's efforts in the area.

Houston-area officials said they already performed more than 1,000 water rescues and almost 1,000 more were in queue early Sunday as torrential rain from Harvey in the city and across southeast Texas.

"These are really wonderful people", Concannon said.

Airbnb has launched a site for people looking for a place to stay and for those who can offer shelter.

The Palmetto South Carolina Region of the Red Cross is helping with the relief effort for Hurricane Harvey, which made landfall Friday night in the Gulf region of Texas and continues to dump rain and cause flooding across the region, according to a news release.

The Red Cross and Salvation Army also need volunteers to help at the shelters set up to house people who fled the coast.

The Red Cross depends on financial donations to be able to provide disaster relief immediately. The closure of blood banks and collection centers along the coast paired with likely injuries from the storm will stress existing supplies.

Right now, about 35 people from the local Red Cross are in Texas.

Driscoll Children's Hospital, which cares for Corpus Christi's youngest and most ill patients, is directly in the path of Harvey.
