Dara Khosrowshahi is the new Uber CEO: 5 Things you must know

"But the times of greatest learning for me have been when I've been through big changes, or taken on new roles". It is thought he has since been negotiating his contract, which could worth as much as $200 million, according to figures unearthed by Business Insider. The Uber board too hasn't stated what made them to zero in on Khosrowshahi.

"We're really fortunate to gain a leader with Dara's experience, talent and vision", the letter to employees reads.

Dents to Uber's image include a visit by executives to a South Korean escort-karaoke bar, an attempt to dig up dirt on journalists covering the company, and the mishandling of medical records from a woman raped in India after hailing an Uber ride. Uber had a leadership vacancy because the board forced out founder and CEO Travis Kalanick because of a list of grievances. Uber has denied the claims, and the case is set for trial in October.

Uber Technologies Inc's [UBER.UL] new Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi told employees on Wednesday the ride-services company would change its culture and may go public in 18 to 36 months.

Mark Okerstrom will take over for Dara Khosrowshahi as president and CEO of the travel tech conglomerate. Barry Diller, Expedia's chairman and senior executive, has voting control of the company. Khosrowshahi has also sat on the board of the New York Times since 2015.

Don't expect Huffington to grill Khosrowshahi, of course, although I am guessing she will lob in a devastating query about his sleep habits. "And I couldn't be happier to pass the torch to such an inspiring leader". "I have enormous respect for the company & founders - Travis, Garrett and Ryan", he wrote on the social network.

"We have no indication he is leaving Expedia", said Dave McNamee, a spokesman for Expedia.

Spokespeople for Uber and Expedia didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The back-and-forth has also featured interjections from people loyal to Mr. Kalanick who are seeking Benchmark's removal from the Uber board.

Benchmark says Kalanick concealed material information regarding internal problems and external litigation threats past year when investors granted him authority to fill three new board seats. Khosrowshahi inherits a laundry load of challenges, including dealing with an ongoing lawsuit with Waymo as well as addressing sexual harassment issues internally following a major investigation.

Khosrowshahi's ascent to the top spot at Uber is also equally surprising given that there were other names doing the rounds.

Who could the next CEO of Uber be? It's not clear whether she was misinformed or whether it was an appointment that hadn't been made public yet.

"The most surprising element of this story - to me, anyway - is that Meg Whitman was in contention for the CEO role at Uber up until the very last minute".
