Thousands of residents in Frankfurt, Germany have evacuated their homes ahead of the scheduled defusal of a major World War II bomb.

On Christmas Day 2016, another 50,000 were evacuated from Augsburg in south Germany after a 1.8-ton bomb was found beneath an underground parking garage.

On Saturday, authorities in the German financial capital began evacuating patients from two hospitals. The evacuation area includes the central bank where $70 billion United States in gold reserves are stored.

Some residents may be reluctant to leave, so Deutsche Welle reports that fire officials and police will be going from door to door and if necessary are authorized to use force to remove the residents from their homes.

A temporary evacuation centre has been set up at Frankfurt's trade fair site.

A smaller bomb was disposed of in the city of Koblenz, 110km west of Frankfurt, where 22,000 residents were moved as a precaution before specialists defused the 500 kilogram bomb.

The 1.4 tonne British bomb was found on a building site on Wednesday. Allied forces carried out a heavy bombing campaign, and between 10 per cent and 30 per cent of the bombs that were dropped did not explode.

The evacuation area in the Westend district includes hospitals, nursing homes and Germany's central bank. Augsburg saw 54,000 people evacuated on Christmas Day a year ago after a British "blockbuster" bomb was uncovered.

The evacuation is set to last two hours, the police said.

The video below gives more detail on the HC4000 "blockbuster" bomb and its potential dangers.

"There're still people surfacing, and they need to be brought out of the evacuation zone", said a spokesman for Frankfurt's firefighting service, adding that this process was "incredibly annoying and time-consuming". In Koblenz, about 21,000 were displaced from homes, a prison, and a hospital as specialists defused a 1,100-pound USA bomb Saturday.
