Patriots trade Brissett, deal for more depth

New England dealt Brissett to the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday in exchange for receiver Phillip Dorsett.

The Patriots are lean in the slot with the season-ending ACL injury suffered by Julian Edelman, and if they can harness Dorsett's blistering speed (4.33 in the 40 at the 2015 scouting combine), they may have a fearsome three-pronged attack in Brandin Cooks, Chris Hogan and Dorsett to start the season.

For the Colts, it casts doubts about QB Andrew Luck's health and when he might be ready to return to the field.

"I would say, again, the odds are most likely he probably won't open up against the Rams", owner Jim Irsay said Thursday after the Colts' win over the Bengals in their preseason finale. The diminutive, yet risky wide receiver had some impressive plays in preseason and training camp, but fumbled three times during the team's preseason finale, which may have sealed his fate off the Colts roster.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is not one for long explanations on his decision making process. The deadline for Luck to be removed from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to start the season is Saturday.

The specifics behind Luck's shoulder labrum injury have been shrouded in mystery.

But to hear the Colts tell the story, they just pulled off the steal of the century. It really just depends if Brissett is actually good. That might seem like a longshot, but others have done so on similarly short prep.

Brissett scored five touchdowns in the Patriots' final preseason game and is best known for his serviceable play as a starter for the Patriots during Tom Brady's Deflategate suspension. For New England, Brissett was a movable piece.

The Patriots selected Brissett with the 91st overall pick in the third round of the 2016 draft out of North Carolina State. In two seasons, he played 26 games with 51 receptions for 753 yards and three touchdown receptions. His rookie contract is up after this season, but all signs to the Patriots believing in him as the successor to Brady. Numerous players Brissett made plays against won't make an National Football League roster this year.
