President Trump discusses North Korea with Japan's Abe

"By forward basing the F-35, the most advanced aircraft in the world, here in the Pacific, we are enabling the Marine Corps to respond quickly during a crisis in support of Japan, the Republic of Korea, and all our regional partners".

North Korea has been test-firing missiles at a rapid clip this year.

The White House said President Donald Trump spoke with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan regarding "ongoing efforts to maximize pressure on North Korea".

Signed with the USA in 2001 - the year South Korea joined the Missile Technology Control Regime - the agreement initially limited Seoul to rockets with a range of just 300km due to United States concerns about triggering a regional arms race in North-east Asia. South Korea's presidential office said it will hold a National Security Council meeting chaired by President Moon Jae-in. Japan has dispatched so-called "radiation sniffer" planes to take samples to confirm that a nuclear explosion did in fact take place.

Impoverished North Korea and the rich, democratic South are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

The USGS and China's quake administration detected a second tremor in North Korea minutes after the first, describing it as a cave-in or collapse. Both speculated it may have been caused by some sort of structural collapse.

The country tested two nuclear weapons previous year, including one in September close to the country's Foundation Day holiday.

"The US imperialists and the South Korean puppet forces do not hide their bellicose nature, claiming that the exercises are to "counter" (North Korea's) ballistic rocket launches and nuclear weapons development", KCNA said. And unfortunately those qualities haven't exactly been hallmarks of the Trump administration.

The ministry did not say how many diplomats wanted to leave. "Denuclearization is a long-term goal, not a short-term solution".

Corey Wallace, a security analyst at Freie University in Berlin, told CNN this week the use of the F-35s out of Japan showed the United States had various options for potentially striking North Korea. Diplomats expected resistance from Russian Federation and fellow veto-wielding power China, particularly given new measures were only recently imposed after Pyongyang staged two long-range missile launches in July. O'Shaughnessy, commander of the U.S. Pacific Air Forces, said in a statement.

"We've basically been paying them off and talking has not worked", Scarborough said.

"Now that the USA has openly declared its hostile intention towards the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, by waging aggressive joint military exercises despite repeated warnings... my country has every reason to respond with tough counter-measures as an exercise of its right to self defense", he said.

South Korea's military said earlier Sunday that North Korea is believed to have conducted its sixth nuclear test after it picked up seismic waves measuring 5.6.

Independent nuclear experts told CNN that another test would likely be a way to increase the yield, or destructive power, of a weapon.

They also agreed that pressure on North Korea must be raised, Abe said.
