Putin warns of "global catastrophe" over North Korea missile tests

That number, however, includes 155 people who work for Russia's diplomatic mission to the United Nations in New York, Putin said, meaning his country could further cut the number of USA diplomats to 300: "It's 455 minus 155".

In July, Putin sought to reduce the number of USA diplomats in Russia to 455, a figure equal to the number of Russian diplomats now in the United States, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

But he called for dialogue and warned against other actions that could escalate the crisis.

Putin is now in China's Xiamen to meet the leaders of BRICS - which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Anything else that serves to fan the flames of war hysteria will lead to a "global catastrophe and a huge number" of human casualties.

For his part, on Tuesday morning the ambassador of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to the United Nations in Geneva, Han Tae-song threatened the USA with "more gift packages" if it continued to put pressure on the regime.

South Korea said it was talking to Washington about deploying aircraft carriers and strategic bombers to the Korean peninsula.

North Korea conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test to date on Sunday, detonating a device that it claimed was a hydrogen bomb created to be carried by a long-range missile capable of reaching mainland United States.

Putin said Saddam Hussein and his family "were killed during the well-known military operation" even though he had "abandoned the production of weapons of mass destruction".

Mr Putin told him the North Korean problem should be solved diplomatically, according to Seoul's presidential office.

He has also said talking to the country was "not the answer".

The most recent measures, imposed last month following Pyongyang's July firing of two intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that apparently brought much of the U.S. mainland into range, zeroed in on the economy.

Overnight, the United States and South Korea reportedly agreed to throw out a limit on the weight of Seoul's warheads, which were now restricted at 500kg (1000lb). Those missiles, successfully tested twice in July, have the ability to reach the U.S. mainland, North Korea says.

It has come to light that Pyongyang is already preparing for another intercontinental ballistic missile launch.

Haley on Monday rejected the Russian-Chinese proposal as "insulting".

The only way forward with the rogue regime is through diplomatic means, he argued. No one would do that.

"You know that the territory controlled by the government forces has swelled a lot in the past two years, and the process still continues", Putin added.
