The new Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal took over on Monday from Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu, who is now the Minister of Commerce and Industry. He even came forward to tender his resignation, which was not accepted by PM Modi. Former Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu warmly welcomed Goyal at the office and handed over the responsibilities to him.

Goyal, who was Minister of State with independent charge, held Coal and Power Ministry before his elevation.

Pradhan's elevation was backed by the success of some of the key schemes of Modi's government - the "Give It Up" for LPG subsidies and the direct benefit transfer of the PAHAL scheme.

"I was introduced to his style of work when I worked with him for two years in the task force, and it was a fantastic experience", said the new Rail minister. The Central and Western railway officials hope that Goyal will make sure several railway projects that had been piled up will finally get completed. "Then P for Prabhu, my elder brother, taught me how to combine the three sectors - power, renewable energy and coal and move towards development at a fast pace", he said. On tweeter he has congratulated the new ministers.

Nitin Gadkari, who was holding Road Transport and Highways and Shipping, will also head the Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Ministry.

Prabhu had offered to quit after a major rail accident in Uttar Pradesh claimed 23 lives last month.
