Watch this block: Cleveland Browns appear in midseason form

Things got off to a horrific start when the Steelers blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown after a Browns three-and-out to open the game, seemingly starting another year of misfortune.

The touchdown was the team's first touchdown in the first quarter of a season opener since 2010, which looks to be a good sign for the Browns offensively with a rookie leading the way for them under center.

There will be messages from tackle Joe Thomas, quarterback DeShone Kizer, linebacker Jamie Collins, linebacker Christian Kirksey, Coach Hue Jackson and others, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reports. The key play in the 68-yard drive was a 21-yard pass interference penalty on Steelers safety Sean Davis at the Pittsburgh 4-yard line. The Steelers ranked 16th in the league in passing yards allowed last season and can use Haden's playmaking abilities as they pursue their fourth straight playoff appearance.

In the moments preceding the Week 2 preseason game between the Giants and Browns, a dozen Cleveland players took a knee during the national anthem to protest social injustice.

Overall it was a solid debut for the rookie, and certainly one of the better debuts from a Browns rookie quarterback in quite some time. First-round pick T.J. Watt is the starter at right outside linebacker.

Here are four big takeaways from Sunday's game.

The Browns bounced back from a disastrous start, just not far enough.

After the players protested before the Giants game, team leader Christian Kirksey told reporters, "We did it out of respect".
