Lucky deflection helps West Ham to win over Huddersfield

West Ham was playing its first home game of the campaign after having to travel for its opening three matches because the stadium it moved into last season had been used for the World Athletics Championships in August.

West Ham United goalkeeper Joe Hart reacts after Andre Ayew (not pictured) scores his side's second goal of the game during the Premier League match at the London Stadium.

Overall it was a much improved performance by the East Londoners but how did we rate each player's individual efforts?

Andy Carroll (West Ham United): Carroll made his first start in five months after injury, and showed just how important he is. After a hard first season here, West Ham won their first home game of the season this evening beating Huddersfield Town 2-0. "We are buzzing, we are happy with the result".

Ayew believes Monday's victory will give the squad plenty of belief heading to The Hawthorns to face Tony Pulis's resilient West Bromwich Albion side on Saturday afternoon.

The goals were also the first Huddersfield have conceded upon their return to English football's top flight. "If we have learned that lesson then I accept this".

"There is no point in lying, it was a massive relief for us", he said after the 2-0 win for West Ham against Huddersfield.

"But we kept the calmness, we changed a little bit the shape of the team and we said to the guys that you're going to go back to basics". We were good in seconds and defended their set pieces ok. It wasn't pretty, but for West Ham and Bilic to get off the bottom, it was exactly what was needed.

The 27-year-old Senegal worldwide is available for Monday's Premier league visit of Huddersfield Town as Bilic hopes to avoid a fourth straight defeat.
