It's an unthinkable crime: Police in West Sacramento are accusing a 33-year-old father, Robert Hodges, of murdering his three young children - all 11 and under - inside the family's apartment.

Upon entry to the intricate, authorities performed life-sparing measures on three kids found inside a flat before proclaiming them perished at the scene.

Authorities have not released any details yet of how the murders unfolded or what weapon was used to kill the children.

Police are actively searching for a male suspect. "I was watching my movies and I didn't hear nothing", she said. Sacramento television station KCRA earlier reported that Kinney told the station the woman had witnessed the killings.

"The officers are absolutely impacted, along with the firefighters, and certainly the family, the neighbors", he said. "'This [investigation] is going to take not hours, not days, it's going to take a long time a long time to come to grips with what happened there".

"In a small town, each of us, whether parents, neighbors, mentors, and just plain citizens, know that protecting our children is our most sacred duty, and the betrayal of that duty in the home is unfathomable and unconscionable", Cabaldon wrote. It's horrific, and it's very hard to deal with.

"Obviously, she's traumatized, and it's going to take some time to find out what's going on", West Sacramento police Sgt. Roger Kinney explained at a press conference. [Their apartment is] so quiet. "I was in my apartment all the time".

Kinney said investigators told him "she was in close proximity".

The names, ages and genders of the children have not been officially released.

Hodges reportedly fled the home after the slayings, but he was later taken into custody by California Highway patrol Officers. Counselors had been brought in to assist students and teachers and Thursday's regularly scheduled school board meeting was canceled because of what the district called the "senseless tragedy".

Other neighbors described the children as "happy-go-lucky" and said it didn't seem like there was much out of the ordinary. "It just happened. It's so sad", Daniel said.

Hundreds of people gathered at a vigil for the children Thursday night at an elementary school, leaving candles, stuffed animals and signed cards in their honor.
