Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles scored the victor as Rafa Benitez's side beat Stoke City 2-1 at St James' Park on Saturday to post their third successive Premier League victory.

Atsu who swapped Chelsea for Newcastle during the summer transfer window put the Magpies in the lead in the 19th minute of the game.

Rafa Benitez says he was "pleased" with Joselu's performance against his former club Stoke City.

Newcastle won 2-1 at the end.

The Scotland winger delivered a right-wing cross with his left foot and Christian Atsu raced in at the far post, beating Mame Biram Diouf to power the ball past keeper Jack Butland.

Magpies goalkeeper Rob Elliot was required to make a rare save when he palmed away Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting's firm drive as Hughes' side warmed to the contest.

Skipper Jamaal Lascelles powered home a 68th-minute header to help Newcastle edge out Stoke.

Christian Atsu scored his first-ever Premier League goal in his 10th appearance in the competition, despite making his English top-flight debut in August 2014.

But the Toon boss played it cool after the game, insisting: "When you win so many games in a row, the fans are excited and thinking about Europe for me it is one game at a time".

- Each of Xherdan Shaqiri's last six Premier League goals have come from outside the box, with only two of his eight goals in the competition coming from inside the area.

Newcastle United are reportedly set to announce a new five-year deal for captain Jamaal Lascelles.
