India Seeks Deportation of Rohingya for Security Reasons

"The court has no business to interfere in such matters of what they call illegal immigrants or illegal migrants", the government said in an affidavit.

Countries across the region fear they will feel the fallout from the crisis.

The lawyer representing the Rohingya said the decision was discriminatory. It also said the government had intelligence indicating links between Rohingya refugees and Islamic State and other extremist groups.

Terming the ongoing Rohingyas issue as a major challenge from across the border in Myanmar, the BJP leader said the government is handling infiltration and illegal migration with "utmost maturity".

Moreover, arrest of Al-Qaeda man in Delhi, who was tasked to recruit Rohingyas for terror activities in India, confirmed that Rohingas are a big threat on internal security.

Human Rights Watch urged India, the world's biggest democracy, to follow the worldwide principle of non-refoulement, which prohibits sending back refugees to a place where their lives are in danger.

The ministry said the illegal influx of large numbers of Rohingya into India began four to five years ago, long before an exodus that saw more than 400,000 Rohingya flee to Bangladesh since August 25 to escape a Myanmar military counterinsurgency offensive that the United Nations has called "ethnic cleansing".


He said the government had evidence of the presence of militants among the refugees who fled a crackdown by the Myanmar government.

"They will either be sent back to Myanmar as the situation improves [there] or [we] will send them to another country that matches with their way of living".

The latest exodus began after Rohingya militants attacked police posts in Rakhine state on August 25 triggering a military backlash.

The U.N. General Assembly is meeting in NY this week.

"We were told to hand over our demands to a peon, which we did not do", Haque said.

The hearing will continue next month. Many believe that Sittwe has similar significance for India to reach Bay of Bengal, as Gwadar in Baluchistan in Pakistan has for China to connect its mainland to Arabian Sea, says a DNA report.
