ALDS Game 1: Trevor Bauer leads Cleveland Indians past New York Yankees

In what surprised nearly every fan of baseball, the New York Yankees slammed Corey Kluber the ace of the Cleveland Indians pitching staff for six runs over just 2 2/3 innings during Game 2 Friday night of the American League Division Series. That's when a showdown between Justin Verlander and Corey Kluber is likely in Game 1 of the AL Championship Series in Cleveland.

For the life of me, I can't understand why Girardi didn't challenge the call after home plate umpire Dan Iassogna allowed Lonnie Chisenhall to take first base after thinking he was hit with a Chad Green pitch.

"He helps us win, " Francona said.

Asked if he was surprised by Sabathia's late-career surge, Francona said: "Not at all". I think he was at 80, and it was set up for our bullpen.

Sabathia is a battle-tested postseason pitcher. The Indians initially said he had a sprained ankle. They run. They've got power.

The New York bench boss opted not to challenge a play with a five-run lead midway through the game which, potentially, led to the Indians' comeback. Sabathia was only at 77 pitches, he wasn't falling apart, and the Yankees had a five-run lead.

Kluber could be on the verge of winning his second Cy Young Award. That includes his start against the Cubs in Game 7 of the World Series. In 11 games as a reliever last season, Severino was 3-0 with a 0.39 and 25 strikeouts in 23 and one-thirds innings; the then-22-year-old, who started two games when the Yankees were eliminated from playoff contention, also held opponents to a 0.105 batting average.

Joe Girardi could be in danger of being cast out of the Bronx, with the New York Yankees manager coming under fire for a series of blunders that has the team on the cusp of elimination from the Major League Baseball playoffs.

Managers in New York City are vilified for everything, from pinch runners to bad breath.

"He continues to work on his defense, and I'm really proud of what he's done, the improvements that he's made, and he's only going to get better", Girardi said.
