Earlier in 2016, the students from FTII had staged protests over the appointment of Chauhan as the chairman. "I will perform my duties to the best of my abilities", Kher tweeted in his response.

Kher had told Chauhan on national television that he may have worked in cinema and possessed years of experience in acting but that in any way did not make him fit to head FTII.

Veteran actor Anupam Kher's appointment has brought a wave of happiness in the film fraternity.

Chouhan, a television actor and a BJP member, had a contentious term as the FTII chairman since his appointment in September 2015.

Questioning actor Anupam Khers appointment as the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) chairman, the students association at the institute today alleged that there was a "conflict of interest" as the actor ran his own acting school in Mumbai. He added, "I certainly do not think Gajendraji is qualified as a producer, director or actor". He has been one of the busiest actors in the film industry and even made a record of winning the Filmfare Award eight years in a row in different categories. "What else do I need?" he said.

Apart from featuring in Hindi films like "Karma", "Daddy", "Lamhe", "Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge", "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai", "Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara", "A Wednesday" and "Baby", the National Award-winner has dabbled in worldwide projects like "Bend It Like Beckham", "Bride and Prejudice", "Speedy Singhs", "The Mistress of Spices", "Lust, Caution" and the Academy Award winning "Silver Linings Playbook".

Kher has appeared in over 500 films and has also been the recipient of the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan for his contribution in the field of cinema and arts.

He has also worked in worldwide projects like "Bend It Like Beckham", "Bride and Prejudice", "Speedy Singhs", "The Mistress of Spices", "Lust, Caution" and the Academy Award winning "Silver Linings Playbook".

He also authored a book "The Best Thing About You Is You". Chauhan had taken over as the new chairman amidst the ongoing agitation from the students. He is an alumnus of the National School of Drama (1978 batch).
