The Sun reported on Thursday that the Central Intelligence Agency told their British counterparts that Jones, 50, died in an airstrike near the Syria-Iraq border.

Officials said conditions on the ground prevent them from knowing for certain if Jones is dead, but her social media activity has been silent for months. "Quite frankly, it's good riddance", a British source told The Sun on Wednesday.

"She added: "(Jones) was crying and wants to get back to Britain but ISIS is preventing her because she is now a military wife.

"I do not have any information that would substantiate that report but that could change and we are looking into this", Pentagon spokesman Maj Adrian Rankine-Galloway said, The Guardian reported Thursday.

The London-born mother of two, the former singer in a punk band, converted to Islam in 2013 while living in the southern county of Kent.

If reports of Jones' death are true, she would be the sixth Briton killed by drones in Syria.

Jones has used her son-who has previously appeared in an ISIS execution video-as a human shield in the past, prompting speculation that he may have been killed in the drone strike. She travelled to Syria with Joe "Jojo" Dixon, her youngest son from a previous relationship, later that year.

The report does not say whether he was with her at the time of the strike.

Mr Fallon also stressed that IS was preparing and inspiring terror attacks in the UK.

Sally Jones appears in a selfie before she left for Syria, and in a burqa with a weapon.

The city is now besieged as coalition forces attempt to drive back ISIS. According to the Sun, her death was kept quiet over fears that her son was killed as well.

Jones is among many suspected IS operatives on a United Nations sanctions list, which includes a travel ban and a freeze on her assets.

Major General Chip Chapman, the former MoD head of counter terror, said Jones would have been a "significant" target as a result of her alliance with Hussain and her role in recruiting IS fighters.
