Peru secured fifth spot in the 10-team South American zone's final standings with a 1-1 home draw against Colombia on Tuesday, guaranteeing an intercontinental playoff against New Zealand, reports Xinhua news agency.

With the scores at 1-1, Colombia were set to qualify automatically for the finals in Russian Federation while Peru were heading for a play-off against New Zealand.

Peru will be ready to overcome "whatever comes their way" in their two-legged World Cup qualifying playoff against New Zealand next month, according to veteran striker Paolo Guerrero.

"We knew what was happening in the other matches, we were playing with the other results and in that moment [I tried] to transmit that [to Peru]", said Falcao after the game.

With former Manchester United forward Radamel Falcao having found himself in the middle of match-fixing allegations after Colombia's final 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, a Peru player has now revealed what the Colombian told him on the pitch.

"They are very highly ranked [and] they are there for a reason but I just felt out of all of them that was the team that would give us confidence going into the game".

Peru midfielder Renato Tapia attested that Colombian players approached his team about the draw, telling Panamericana TV: "In the last five minutes, the Colombians approached us". I believe we can deliver that.

Argentina has secured an automatic place in Russian Federation 2018 with a 3-1 win.

"The last game against Japan was better than the previous games (at the Confederations Cup) - we get our belief from that, knowing we can compete and bearing in mind all of those have been away", Hudson said.

Argentina qualified for the World Cup courtesy Lionel Messi's hat-trick against Ecuador.

"It is best to travel as fast as possible, but we also have to see how we will handle the issue of players [who play] overseas", Gareca said.

Peru's president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski is confident the country's football team will beat New Zealand in November.
