The NFL's viewership has been down this season, and many say that is due, at least in part, to Americans' disagreement with the players' kneeling during the Anthem.

Another NFL weekend of players sitting or kneeling during the U.S. national anthem - played before every sporting event imaginable in the United States, even when no nations are involved - prompted Donald Trump to renew his criticism of the custom after Monday Night Football. The commissioner added that, "like many of our fans, we believe that everyone should stand" during the singing of "The Star-Spangled Banner".

Roger Goodell, has sent a statement to all the league's teams regarding the ongoing campaign of national anthem protests.

Writing that he expects a "full and open discussion" of the issues next week in New York, Goodell closes with, "The NFL is at its best when we ourselves are unified".

President Trump praised Goodell's remarks in a tweet Wednesday morning.

Donald Trump's distaste for athletes failing to stand for the United States anthem before games seems to have moved the National Football League to action.

"The NFL is doing the hard work of trying to move from protest to progress, working to bring people together", the league said.

Spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that the White House supported moves to force players to stand.

Trump tweeted on Wednesday "It is about time that Roger Goodell of the NFL is finally demanding that all players STAND for our great National Anthem-RESPECT OUR COUNTRY".

"With Jemele Hill at the mike (sic), it is no wonder ESPN ratings have 'tanked, ' in fact, tanked so badly it is the talk of the industry!"

The issue has heated up every since Trump called on owners last month to fire players who do not stand for the anthem and encouraged fans to walk out of stadiums if players disrespected the flag.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has threatened to bench players who take a knee.
