A record 169 billionaires, including Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg and Under Armour's Kevin Plank, fell short of the minimum net worth required to land them among the richest of the rich in the US.

As a candidate, Trump claimed his net worth was almost $9 billion (£6.8 billion), but Forbes says the actual figure is closer to $4 billion (£3.3 billion). The year before, he was ranked 156th.

Forbes said it estimated Trump's net worth through months of reporting and interviews, in part because the president has never released his tax forms. Richard DeVos' net worth is valued at $5.1 billion and is ranked No. 107 on this year's list.

Investor Warren Buffett, chairman and CEO at Berkshire Hathaway Inc., held onto the third spot with his net worth at $78 billion, an increase of $12.5 billion from past year even after giving away more than $3 billion of Berkshire Hathaway stock in July. By Forbes' estimates, Trump's wealth has fallen 31% in two years.

Donald Trump's net worth has taken a nosedive since he turned to politics, according to Forbes. A major reason for the slide is a decrease in value among Trump's largest source of wealth - the New York City real estate market.

According to Forbes, the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's ranking.
