The Indiana Department of Workforce Development said Friday the state's labor force grew to almost 3.34 million people with the September addition of almost 9,700 people entering the job market.

The state as a whole had more than 4,400 people employed in September compared with a year ago and more than 5,200 fewer people counted as unemployed. Jobs were up in seven of the 11 supersectors with the largest gain in trade, transportation & utilities (up 7,300). The largest increase over the past 12 months was in leisure and hospitality (up 26,100), while the largest decline was in government (down 5,300). Construction and manufacturing saw job losses over the year. Resident employment and unemployment both declined over the month. Matching the right workers with the right jobs across the state has been hard for several years. The New England unemployment rate averaged 3.9 percent. It is based on a monthly survey of 985 houses.

Interestingly, no sectors in Weld County had any over-the-year losses, and all industries either added jobs or remained the same as 2016. "While there are more people working today than any time in the state's history and participating in the robust economy, there are still people who want to work but who may have a barrier to employment".

The national unemployment rate was also 4.2 percent in September, which is down two-tenths of a percentage point.

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - Indiana's unemployment rate increased to 3.8 percent in September. North Dakota has the lowest rate in the region at 5.7 percent while IL is the highest at 9.9 percent.
