Two injured soldiers were evacuated to the Landstuhul Regional Medical Centre in Germany and were said to be in a stable condition.

The Pentagon has scrambled to find answers about how the 12-man Army team and a Nigerien patrol were attacked, as well as why Johnson's body wasn't discovered for two days.

Unfortunately, Johnson's death has become the focus of a feud between President Trump and Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, a Florida Democrat, who spoke at Johnson's funeral.

Wilson, who knew Johnson since he was a child, later Sunday repeated her call that the attack was Trump's Benghazi - referring to the 2012 embassy attack in Libya that left four American officials dead.

"The president said that he knew what he signed up for, but it hurts anyways".

One of Sgt. Johnson's sisters, Tornisha Ghent, said she'll remember him for his extraordinary personality.

Trump also claimed that he had "proof" that what he said to the wife of the soldier who died in action differed from what Wilson said. "And that's what made me upset and cry even more because my husband was an awesome soldier".

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly entered the fray Thursday.

La David Johnson, one of the four US soldiers killed in a military operation in Niger on October 4, told ABC's Good Morning America that President Trump "made me cry even worse" when he called to offer condolences last week. "La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!" he tweeted.

Trump tweeted that Wilson "fabricated" his statement and the fight escalated through the week.

Johnson said Monday that Wilson's account was accurate. "I don't know nothing they won't show me a finger, a hand", she said. "And it made me cry because I was very angry at the tone of his voice and how he said it". The White House offered no additional comment.

Johnson was asked if she had anything to say to the president.

She added, "I think that he has to admit what he did was incorrect in terms of the speech he mischaracterized. But you don't remind a grieving widow of that".

Trump has disputed the congresswoman's claim, which Myeshia Johnson backed up during Monday's interview.

Trump, meanwhile, called some of Wilson's claims "sickening."

She was principal of a school Johnson's father attended.

He responded to this criticism by falsely claiming that Mr Obama, and other former USA presidents had not called the relatives of dead service members.
