E-commerce company Amazon founder Jeff Bezos on Saturday pipped Microsoft co-founder and the routine world's richest man Bill Gates from the top spot.

The online retailer has growing interests in film, television, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and drones. Bill Gates have stayed in the list of top 10 billionaires of the world since 1995.

Bezos became the richest person in the world for the first time in July as Amazon stock hit an all-time high on July 27, ahead of Amazon's second quarter earnings announcement.

But Gates also got a boost as Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) stock rose 7 percent.

Bezos first joined the Forbes 400 in 1998, one year after Amazon went public, with a net worth of $1.6bn.

The founder and chief executive officer of the retail juggernaut added $US10.4 billion ($13.1 billion) to his net worth as Amazon shares jumped 13 per cent, the most in 2 1/2 years. In 2017, the billionaire couple gave away $4.6 billion worth of shares in charity, making it their second biggest donation after $16 billion which they donated in 1999.

Warren Buffett was third in the latest ratings, with $88 billion in assets, followed by Amancio Ortega, Spain's Zara clothing tycoon, with a $77.2-billion fortune, and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg with $75.4 billion.
