Sixty percent of hospitals in the state got A grades from the national health care nonprofit Leapfrog, which studied data from the American Hospital Association and other sources.

Eighteen of 39 hospitals graded in the semiannual Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades report received the highest possible mark, including nine that are located in the Denver area. "You deserve to know which hospitals do the best at protecting their patients from harm", Leapfrog said on their website.

"Everyone at Freeman works together to set a standard of excellence to deliver compassionate, innovative and safe healthcare to the communities we serve", said Paula F. Baker, Freeman President and Chief Executive Officer.

"What we've learned is that transparency has a real impact on patient safety".

"The "A" rating from the Leapfrog Group reflects the fact that patient safety is our top concern for every person - let alone patient - who enters our facilities, and we attained this rating through the consistent and conscientious efforts of our stellar clinicians, nurses, and other dedicated hospital staff", she said.

The safety of Pennsylvania's hospitals has shown improvement over the course of 2017, making big strides in an updated report that earlier ranked the state in the nation's lower half.

North Dakota, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland and NY had the lowest percent of hospitals earning an "A" grade. Rhode Island ranked first among the states with the most A hospitals.

In the category of infections for the fall 2017 report, Beaufort Memorial Hospital scored as well as the best hospitals in the country all five areas surveyed, which was one more category than the spring report.

Based on that data, Leapfrog measures 27 aspects of patient health and safety. "All seven Rhode Island hospitals included in the report received an A. In 2012, the state ranked 50th for its hospitals" grades. Leapfrog measured things like preventable infections, patient satisfaction, and systems in place to prevent mistakes.
