The Colts have placed quarterback Andrew Luck on the injured reserve list, general manager Chris Ballard announced Thursday.

Luck underwent surgery to his throwing shoulder in January and had been trying to work his way back to the field.

"I'm super anxious about Andrew Luck and his future", Young said on ESPN's NFL Live on Wednesday.

Colts owner Jim Irsay kept spinning that Luck might have a chance to play 10 days before the season-opener against the Los Angeles Rams, even when his QB wasn't practicing. Ex-Colts linebacker D'Qwell Jackson even suggested that Luck's injury could be career-ending.

The Colts are 2-6 on the year.

Ballard said it's too early to put a timetable on when Luck would be able to throw again, but he was optimistic about Luck's future, saying none of the doctors told them it was a career-ending issue.

But that approach started backfiring when Luck originally injured his shoulder in Week 3 of the season.

Instead, Colts fans will have to wait until hopefully 2018 to see Luck return to the field-having not played in an National Football League game since last January, with obviously this latest disappointing injury development.

News of Luck's extended absence drew confusion, frustration and criticism on social media. He also seems to have had the injury for a long time, two years.

In his place, former Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett has started for the Colts.

Ballard dismissed any notion that Luck's career is in jeopardy, however.

"The consensus from all the doctors is to continue rehab, to be patient and continue rehab", Ballard said. The job is his to roll with, knowing Luck isn't walking back into the huddle until next season. Luck missed a game last season with a concussion and all of this season with the shoulder.

As for Luck, he said that he'll come out of all this as a better quarterback.

Rarely does the injury guarantee ever really matter, especially as it relates to franchise quarterbacks.
