His removal makes it more likely that President Robert Mugabe's wife Grace will follow in her husband's footsteps as leader of Zimbabwe.

His dismissal was announced by Simon Khaya Moyo, the information minister.

Mr Moyo told reporters in the capital, Harare, that the vice president has been removed from office "with immediate effect".

On Saturday, the 93-year-old president threatened to fire Mnangagwa, accusing him of fanning factionalism to garner support ahead of a party special congress due in December, after Grace was booed at a weekend rally.

It also provides a boost for Mugabe's wife, Grace, who has been a vocal critic of the vice president and is also seen as a potential successor to her husband.

"It had become evident that his conduct in the discharge of his duties had become inconsistent with his official responsibilities".

Mnangagwa, who survived an attempt on his life in Gwanda this year through food poisoning was key in the Zanu PF government since 1980 where he held several cabinet posts. "The only person possessing such qualities is. the first lady".

Morgan Tsvangirai, Mugabe's main rival, has been in and out of a South African hospital after revealing that he had colon cancer in 2016.
