Arsenal legend Wright: Chelsea not big enough for Conte and Luiz

Luiz was dropped from Chelsea's matchday squad for the 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday.

David Luiz believes that Antonio Conte is "punishing him" for his friendship with former Chelsea striker Diego Costa, according to reports.

A recurring theme of Conte's first season at Chelsea was his reluctance to engage in any public spats with rival coaches, but the fiery Italian has made an exception in recent months to bite back at Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.

Conte also praised the contribution of Andreas Christensen.

Antonio Conte has consistently claimed he is "different" to his Chelsea predecessors as questions have been raised over his future during recent weeks, but, until Sunday, it was hard to pinpoint exactly what he meant. It's only a tactical decision. Today I did this and I think Christensen played a massive game.

"If I see that you are not in good form, it's normal". Another young player, a really good player for the present and the future.

"I repeat: I have to put my face to every situation and then sometimes to make important decisions".

Speaking after the match, Conte insisted the decision was tactical and had been vindicated by Christensen's performance.

Just a few weeks ago, Conte hailed Luiz as his team's best defender.

Priority targets such as Romelu Lukaku and Alex Sandro were not secured primarily because Chelsea refused to meet the financial demands required to make the deals happen, and those decisions rest with the club's de facto chief executive and transfer negotiator Granovskaia. "I was very happy for this", Conte said in the press conference following the win over United.

The exchange followed the 3-0 Champions League defeat to Roma. Sometimes I can make mistakes.

"I think that I have a squad". On Saturday, David Luiz was back but only for a light fitness session.
