The New England Patriots have claimed tight end Martellus Bennett off waivers, a day after he was cut by the Green Bay Packers.

Bennett was cut by the Packers to end a freakish situation. He did not play in the 30-17 loss on Monday to the Detroit Lions.

The Packers released him with a "failure to disclose physical condition" designation as he continues to battle a shoulder injury, per Schefter, and he had already been ruled out for Week 10 before Green Bay let him go.

A 2014 Pro Bowl choice, Bennett has 427 catches for 4,520 yards and 30 touchdowns in 142 career games. He was released by the Packers on Wednesday. These next games are for you. That deal contained a signing bonus of $6.3m, of which Bennett was to receive $2.1m at the beginning of each season. Hollister has three receptions for 37 yards.

In seven starts for the Packers, however, Bennett racked up just 24 catches for 233 yards and zero scores.

"Martellus Bennett will not practice this week, he will not be available for the game", coach Mike McCarthy said before Wednesday's practice.

New England decided against bringing Bennett back as a free agent this past spring after acquiring fellow tight end Dwayne Allen from the Colts. Prior to arriving in New England ahead of last season, the seasoned pass catcher spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Chicago Bears along the way.

Fellow tight ends Lance Kendricks and Richard Rodgers will be in line for additional snaps with the absence of Bennett.
