Tragedy struck after a boat carrying 38 people capsized at Ferry Ghat in Ibrahimpatnam area of the city on Sunday evening. Of them, 32 belonged to a walkers' association from Ongole in Prakasam district and six from Nellore.

The rescue operations were underway and senior officials rushed to the spot. "Later, the boat was broken to extract the victims stranded under it", Commissioner of Police D. Gautam Sawang, who oversaw the rescue operations, said. "If they had taken the insurance under Chandranna Bima Scheme, an additional amount of Rs 2 lakh would be paid to each family", he said.

The boat, owned by a private agency, overturned as it approached the ferry point around 5.45pm. As many as 15 people were either rescued by local fishermen or swam to safety. Nearby fishermen rescued 17 people, District Collector B Lakshmikantham told reporters. Efforts were on to find the remaining seven passengers, the police said, adding that none of the passengers was wearing life jacket.

As many as 41 people, including the boat driver, were in the boat at the time of the incident. Local media reports suggested the boat was overloaded with passengers and the buoyancy of water changed leading to the disaster. There were 38 tourists on boat belonging to a private operator and coming to Pavitra Sangam at Ibrahimpatnam from Bhavani Island.

Tourism Minister Akhila Priya ordered probe into the incident.
