Matray says although the shooting occurred before school started, there were already kids on campus.

The alleged gunman was shot dead by law enforcement officials, the sheriff's department said.

Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston said that officers are investigating at least five crime scenes in and around the school in Rancho Tehama Reserve, about 130 miles north of Sacramento.

Some 100 law enforcement officers responded to the shooting, and students at the school have been safely evacuated, he added.

Enloe Medical Center spokeswoman Nicole Johansson told the Associated Press that the hospital was treating at least four victims of the incident, including three minors. "This guy has been insane, and he's been threatening us and everything".

One student was wounded at the school and another child was shot while driving with a woman, who also was wounded, Johnston said. "That evolved into multiple victims and multiple shots at the school", the deputy said.

"That evolved to multiple victims and multiple shots at the school, the elementary school", he told Action News Now, a TV news channel in Northern California.

The FBI has confirmed it will assist in the investigation. The child had two gunshot wounds, according to emergency scanner traffic.

The school remains on lockdown. They lived near the unnamed man and said he had been shooting a lot of rounds lately.

A parent, Coy Ferreira, said he was dropping off his daughter when he heard gunshots.

"We offer our condolences to the families who lost loved ones and unite with all Californians in grief", Brown said.

He declined to release the name of the shooter but said he was "aware" of a domestic violence incident that neighbors reported.
