Tesla is popping after its semi truck and roadster announcements (TSLA)

Production for the new Roadster sports auto, a likely Ferrari rival, will start in 2020.

Going up a 5-degree grade hill, the Tesla Semi should maintain a speed of 65 miles per hour, while a conventional diesel truck slows to 45 miles per hour, Musk said. Tesla says the new Roadster will have 620 miles of range and a top speed of 250 mph (402 kph).

At the company's design studio in Hawthorne, California, on Thursday evening, Tesla announced the details of its new all-electric semi truck.

The Semi is the company's first electric truck, which it claims can travel up to 500 miles on a single charge.

When the truck's tailgate came down, out rolled a new and previously unannounced Tesla Roadster, which company CEO Elon Musk called the fastest production auto in the world.

Without a trailer, the Tesla Semi goes from zero to 60 miles per hour in five seconds, compared to 15 seconds in a comparable diesel truck, Tesla said, and does zero to 60 miles per hour in 20 seconds with a full 80,000-pound load. Tesla says there will be a host of fleet management tools and routing tools, which will be made available on the Semi, and are otherwise seen on cars.

Just like it has built a global network of "superchargers" for its passenger EVs, Tesla plans to build a network of "megachargers" around the world for trucks refuelling on the go, with the powerful plugs able to deliver 400 miles of charge in less than 30 minutes.

"Electric motors have advantages for hauling: fewer moving parts, cheap fuel and zero tailpipe pollution", NPR's Emily Sullivan reports.

While shares in the company are up more than 40% this year, they have fallen 20% since hitting record highs in mid-September. Musk has said it should take about two years for the semi to go on sale. The Semi also comes with regenerative braking for improved brake life, while there is no need to shift gears on this truck, which should make it convenient for drivers. Tesla is still having issues getting the Model 3 up and running, plus the new Model Y crossover is expected soon. The anemic number fell far short of expectations; the company had received 140,000 advance orders for the auto within hours of it being announced in the spring of 2016.

Elon Musk continues to disrupt the auto industry with Tesla's innovations. Tesla was offering test drives to individuals at yesterday's event who put down a $50,000 deposit on the Roadster without knowing the full price.
