This year, about 51 million Americans will take planes, trains, automobiles and other modes of transit 80 kilometres or more to their holiday destinations, a 3.3 per cent increase over last year.

This is almost three and a half percent from previous year. Eighty-nine percent of travelers will be traveling by auto. The Thanksgiving travel period is defined as Wednesday, Nov. 22, to Sunday, Nov. 26.

"Thanksgiving kicks off the start of a busy holiday season, and more thankful Americans will travel to spend time with friends and family this year", said Sandra Marsian, AAA vice president of membership, travel and marketing, in a press release.

AAA said that most Maryland and DE travelers are expected to drive to their destinations.

This year is expected to see the most Thanksgiving travelers since 2005.

About 90 percent of holiday travel will be by auto, according to AAA.

If you're traveling over Thanksgiving, you'll have even more company than past year.

While gas prices are higher this year, Armbruster says travelers will continue to supply the demand.

No matter your transportation option, experts want you to know that Wednesday the day before Thanksgiving, is the worst day to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday. "This should set the table for small discounts at the pump, before the holiday arrives". The 1.2 percent increase represents 335 more travelers than previous year, and the most since 2008. Air fares are at their lowest levels in five years for a round-trip flight for the top 40 domestic routes, AAA said.

But some of the savings will be lost when renting a auto.

Springfield averages $2.54 a gallon, according to AAA.

"I am leaving Saturday to go to IN to have Thanksgiving with my dad", she said. AAA recommends motorists have their vehicles inspected by a trusted fix shop, such as one of the more than 7,000 AAA Approved Auto fix facilities across North America. AAA's is the only rating system that uses full-time, professionally trained evaluators to inspect each property on an annual basis.

AAA and research firm IHS Markit base their forecast on recent and predicted growth in the economy, consumer spending, household wealth and other measures. This will mark the ninth straight year of rising holiday travel.
