SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) - At least six Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) militants and an Indian air force (IAF) commando were killed in a fierce gunfight in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir on Saturday, police said.

"As the search approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering an encounter", they said.

He said that along with Owaid, LeT commanders Zargam and Mehmood were also eliminated in the operation.

Dr Vaid said it was a joint operation by different security forces based on specific informations.

A defence spokesperson told Rising Kashmir that an IAF GARUD has been killed while an army man was injured in the ongoing gunfight between militants and the state government forces in Chandergeer.

Director General of Police (DGP) Dr S P Vaid described it a major success and said Hajin was a hard area. His pro-India and anti-Pakistan insurgency and politics led to successful Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Kashmir in 1996.

After the PDP-BJP government took over in March 2015, Pakistani cadres of Let established a strong back in Hajin.

"One soldier has also sustained injuries in the operation", Col. Kalia said.

Last month two militants and two IAF personnel were killed in a similar gunfight in the village.

"The encounter is now finished and was a success", the region's police chief Shesh Paul Vaid said.

Owaid is the younger brother of Musaib, who was killed in January this year. Lakhvi's own son Qasim had been killed by security forces in an encounter in 2007.
