Egged on by White House guests, Donald Trump pardoned a turkey named "Drumstick" on Tuesday (Nov 21), while jokingly vowing not to overturn similar Obama-era acts of presidential forgiveness.

"Today, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I will grant a presidential pardon to a Turkey", said President Trump, flanked by wife, Melania, and son, Barron, at the Rose Garden ceremony.

"Names for each were suggested by people from around the world and this morning, we are introducing you, for the first time, to Wishbone and Drumstick", Wittenburg said as the crowd clapped and the turkeys loudly gobbled. The turkeys were raised in western Minnesota, and after the pardoning, the White House says the turkeys will join last year's lucky birds at "Gobblers Rest" at Virginia Tech.

How to watch: The White House will be live-streaming the occasion.

"I have been informed by the White House counsel's office that Tater and Tot's pardons can not under any circumstances be revoked", he joked.

"So Tater and Tot, you can rest easy", the President said. The 47 pound turkey's favorite band is Journey and has a "tall and proud" strut style, according to the White House. That year, President George H.W. Bush started what has become the tradition upheld by every president since.

Whether or not that's true, the first documented turkey pardon was given by President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

"It was 70 years ago that the National Turkey Federation first presented the National Thanksgiving Turkey to President Harry Truman-who, I might add, did not grant the pardon".
