A Milan court on Thursday sentenced former AC Milan and Brazil forward Robinho aka Robson de Souza Santos to nine years in jail for gang raping a 22-year-old Albanian woman in a Milan disco on January 22 2013.

According to Italian wire service ANSA, the 33-year-old Brazilian, who now plays for Atletico Mineiro in his native country, was convicted, along with five others, of gang-raping a 22-year-old Albanian woman in a Milan nightclub in January 2013.

The 33-year old player is currently now playing in his homeland with Atletico Minero.

He now has the right to appeal, with the sentence not enforced until the completion of this process.

"With regards to the news involving the forward Robinho, regarding something that happened some years ago, we would like to clarify that he has already defended himself against the allegation, affirming that he was not involved in the incident", the statement read.

Robinho was also accused of sexual assault in London in 2009 while at Manchester City but was cleared of any wrongdoing.

According to local legislation no Brazilian citizen can be extradited to another country under request to face criminal charges, although that will not apply should he leave his home nation and is detained elsewhere.

Robinho, who has 100 caps for Brazil, joined Manchester City from Real Madrid in 2008 as the first major signing of the Sheikh Mansour era. Robinho joined Atletico Mineiro from Guangzhou Evergrande previous year.

However, he struggled to adapt to the Premier League and was sold to AC Milan for just £15m two years later after a loan spell at his hometown club Santos.
