The EC's announcement came a day after the Madaras High Court directed the EC to hold by-election in RK Nagar by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Thursday said the Election Commission has allotted the "two leaves" symbol to the unified AIADMK led by him and his Deputy O Panneerselvam.

After losing the symbol, TTV Dinakaran, nephew of jailed VK Sasikala, announced that he would contest the RK Nagar bypoll as his faction enjoy the support of the cadre.

"We will win the bypoll with huge margin and prove that we are truly the successors of late Chief Minister and party leader J Jayalalithaa", former MP and spokesperson K C Palaniswamy told IANS.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Friday announced journalist-turned-politician N Marudhu Ganesh as its candidate for the Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar (RK Nagar) Assembly constituency bypoll, which is scheduled to be held on December 21.

The RK Nagar constituency is considered to be a stronghold of the ruling party as it had returned seven AIADMK candidates in 11 elections.

Dalit party VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan said that even if there is no formal alliance between the BJP and AIADMK ruling faction, it is evident that they are working together. EPS and OPS have merged, and won the two-leaves symbol which was frozen by the Election Commission due to their fight earlier.

He said this will be the first election to be faced by the AIADMK government after the death of Jayalalithaa and also after it got the "two leaves" symbol.

J Deepa, niece of Jayalalithaa too, jumped into the electoral fray last time forming MGR Amma Deepa Forum.

Last time, BJP had fielded music director Gangai Amaran as its candidate.

"Since earlier by election was deferred following cash distribution, the Commission should take concrete steps to prevent recurrence of such malpractices, KMDK General Secretary", E.R. Eswaran said.
