In her acceptance speech, Nel-Peters said she was both proud and humbled to have won and that her dreams had become a reality. This year's edition had the most contestants ever.

Peters-Nel was robbed at gunpoint and survived an attempted hijacking in June, shortly after being crowned Miss South Africa.

The finale took place at The AXIS theatre of Planet Hollywood casino and resort in Las Vegas.

The 26-year-old beauty from Camarines Sur was the first Asian to enter the top 10 of Miss Universe 2017, but failed to advance to the competition's final five.

Nel-Peters is from the South African coastal community of Sedgefield in the Western Cape province. "I am Miss Universe and this is for you". Interestingly, she was the first African woman to become Miss Universe victor.

"I think we should have equal work for equal pay for women all over the world".

The second runner-up was miss Jamaica and the first runner-up was Miss Columbia.

Three days after people in the USA celebrated Thanksgiving, Harvey told the audience he is "grateful for the Oscars", referring to the best-picture flub at this year's Academy Awards.

Nel-Peters accepts her crown from her doppelganger, basically - Iris Mittenaere, Miss Universe 2016 (and previously Miss France). "Congratulations to our Miss Universe!"
