"It may be a bad flu season, and in particular, in a bad season, you want to get every bit of protection you can". Even if you got vaccinated you may be at risk.

One rationale for the arduous flu season may be that this year's presently developed vaccine may have disparate to the flu drain may have wound up propagating creating the vaccinations unproductive at intercepting the outbreak.

"Just because it was the predominant strain in Australia six months ago doesn't mean it will be the predominant strain here", Dr. Charles Bregier, with Novant Health, said. "Currently, most influenza vaccines in the United States are produced using chicken eggs, while a few are made in cell culture or by using recombinant DNA technologies", explained the NIAID news brief. Current vaccines are developed based on the previous year's flu strain, which creates a high chance of a mismatch. The vaccine that the Australians received was only 10 percent effective.

Only two states, Oklahoma and Louisiana have widespread flu.

According to SRHD, peak flu season in the Inland Northwest is typically between January and February.

In fact, two deaths and 105 hospitalizations have been reported, which the state Department of Health says is relatively high for this time of year.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. "Some of them are very mild, and some of them are severe", Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), tells Bustle. The department didn't release information about where the deaths happened, or what strain of flu the deceased contracted. "Increasing the number of people who receive a flu shot also helps those around them stay healthy, including seniors, young children, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions that make them more vulnerable to serious flu complications". Everyone should take other precautions, such as regular hand-washing and avoiding people who are sick. You should also wash your hands, and be careful of items like door knobs and sell phones which collect bacteria.

The flu is treated primarily with rest and fluid to let the body fight the infection on its own.
