Supermoon 2017: Here's how to watch it

At that point the moon will be 222,135 miles away from Earth - almost 16,000 miles closer than it usually is during the year, Space.com reported.

The moon is nearly full Saturday night and will be full Sunday.

While scientists argue about the influence of the close passing of Earth's natural satellite for geophysical processes, the Moon is inexorably approaching and promises to be an interesting phenomenon for all the earthlings who are lucky enough to see this spectacle. The moon's average distance from Earth is 238,000 miles, according to Space.com.

According to Michael Nicholas, Public Observer Director of Chicago's Adler Planetarium, the moon will cope a distance of 222,135km from the ground today. Since the supermoon on Jan. 31 will be the second full moon in January, it's dubbed a Blue Moon, and will occur during a total lunar eclipse. "The farther side, is called 'apogee" and the closer side, is called 'perigee.' The full moons with a closest perigee seem to be approximately 14 percent bigger, and 30 percent more brillant, but close to the apogee in the moon's orbit.

The last full moon of 2017 will appear especially plump and vibrant in the night sky on Sunday (Monday NZ time). Based on the moon's rotation this month's full moon - which is also being called the Cold Moon - will be at its closest point to Earth, creating the Supermoon.


The best times to see it, experts say, are right after sundown and just before sunrise the next day. Part of it depends on where you're viewing the supermoon.

A supermoon occurs when there is a full moon at or near the point where the moon reaches perigee.

"If you stretch out your arm at full length, and stretch out your thumb, and compare the size of the full moon in the sky to the size of your thumb, you'll notice the width of the full moon compared to the size of your thumb; you can put four full moons across the width of your thumb". But the supermoon that took place exactly a month before that was much more notable - it was the closest supermoon to Earth since January 1948.

"The supermoon gets headlines because the moon's a little bigger and a little brighter, but people get frustrated that they can't always tell the difference".
