Mr Sibal had told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that since the court's decision in the case would have very serious ramifications, the hearing should be deferred till July 2019 by which time the general election will be over. But other litigants - All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Babri Masjid Action Committee, and Ayodhya resident late Hashim Ansari's son Iqbal Ansari - endorsed Sibal's stand, saying that the plea of deferment was made after due consultations.

The Supreme Court yesterday fixed the next hearing for the long-standingCmatter for Feb.8, 2018.

Modi, who was back on the campaign trail in poll-bound Gujarat on Wednesday, added that he would not remain silent on the triple talaq as the issue is for the right of women. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also attacked the opposition party on the matter in his public meetings today.

The Congress had distanced itself from Sibal's stand in the Supreme Court. In this case, advocate Syed Shahid Hussain Rizvi, who is the AoR for UP Sunni Waqf Board, had signed an appearance slip clearly mentioning that Sibal appeared for the board on Thursday. "The PM did not check the fact that actually I never represented the Sunni Waqf Board in the Supreme Court".

"I want to question the Congress Party and explain if it wants the Ram Janmbhoomi matter to be heard at the earliest or not", he asked.

PM Modi had earlier congratulated the Sunni Waqf Board for dissociating themselves from Sibal's statement in connection with the matter. A list showing which lawyer appeared for which side, part of the very same December 5 order sheet, showed that the prominent lawyer appeared for UP Sunni Waqf Board, whose civil appeal has been numbered "4192" of 2011. The chairman of the body, Zufar Ahmed Farooqui said Sibal wasn't the board's lawyer and that Mehboob himself was not a member of the board, "but an individual party to the matter".

The Hindus, however, claim that a Ram temple that originally stood there was demolished to construct the mosque. "He (Sibal) just gave his arguments on the political level, as they will lose the elections if they lose this case", Swamy said.
