In its statement, the Authority has stated that the Aadhaar Act is in force and linking the Aadhaar with welfare program, bank account, PAN and SIM is legal. However, in the hearing of the Supreme Court on Thursday, the government lawyer said that he is not opposed to the extension of the deadline till March 31 for those who do not have the Aadhaar card.

The government has made it mandatory to link Aadhaar with PAN card, bank accounts and other services to bring in transparency and get a better control over domestic black money safe havens.

"Under the provisions of recently introduced section 139AA of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (the Act), with effect from 01.07.2017, all taxpayers having Aadhaar Number or Enrolment Number are required to link the same with Permanent Account Number (PAN)".

The deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar previously was July 31 but was extended to August 31 and later to December 31, 2017.

The Union finance ministry's decision on extending the Aadhaar-PAN linking deadline till March 31 next year comes a day after the Centre had informed the Supreme Court that it was willing to extend till March 31 the deadline fixed for all Indian citizens to mandatorily link Aadhaar to avail various services and welfare schemes. Their petition also challenges the validity of Aadhaar, which contains biometric details like finger prints and iris scans.

The Attorney General had told the court that no coercive action would be taken against those who do not have the Aadhaar card but are willing to enrol for. This is the third time extension from the government as the most number of people across the country are yet to link their Aadhaar with PAN card. On June 1, 2017, PML Rules have been amended to make Aadhaar mandatory for linking all bank accounts, insurance, pension, mutual funds and DMAT accounts.
