JeM militants killed in gunfight, woman dies in clashes

The fighting stopped Tuesday after two militants were killed and a police official and a soldier were injured, police said.

As per local sources, the militants were trapped in the house of one Muhammad Yakub.

The police, army and the CRPF had started the operation at Shopian's Wanipora village on Monday evening after they received a tip-off about the presence of terrorists. The gunfight continued throughout the night.

Over eight civilians sustained injuries as protesters clashed with the security forces in Shopian's Batmurran area after the encounter left two militants dead.

According to the Jammu and Kashmir police, two terrorists were trying to escape with the help of some locals, but security forces opened fire on them during which the terrorist duo along with a civilian was killed. They were identified as Tanveer Ahmad from Batmuran Shopian and Ali @Qari, a foreign militant.

Officials said that three militants were reportedly hiding in the house. Confirming this a police spokesman said that another militant fled from the encounter site. He claimed that the civilian died in cross firing between militants and armed forces.

In yet another bloody clash between civilians and the military on the Indian side of Kashmir, one woman has died and several other people have been injured in the Shopian district. In the morning Jan, 30, was killed when she was hit by a bullet near the encounter site.

"Around 24 civilians were brought to our hospital out of which we referred some 11 people to Srinagar hospitals for specialized treatment". The man had been caught in the cross-fire during an anti-terror operation, the army said.

Two security personnel including a jawan of 44 RR and a cop were also injured during the encounter. Security forces used explosives to blast the house in which the militants were holed up. Their condition was however reported to be stable.
