Robby Strong poses with the box he claims was left for Steve Mnuchin at his Bel-Air mansion.

In video of the scene taken by an NBC Los Angeles helicopter, an officer can be seen opening the box, dumping out its contents and spreading a dark, unevenly clumped substance across the ground.

A gift-wrapped package sent to US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin's home in a posh Los Angeles neighbourhood sparked a security scare but turned out to be filled with horse manure.

Once police opened it and saw the horse poop, investigators deemed the package non-threatening, KTLA reported Saturday. (Facebook) The gift was addressed to "Stevie".

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, right, and his wife Louise Linton, left, react as Mnuchin holds up a sheet of new $1 bills, the first currency notes bearing his and U.S. Treasurer Jovita Carranza's signatures, at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington.

"PS - Kiss Donald for me", it continued.

The gift-wrapped manure was found at 19:40 (03:40 GMT) at the home next to Mr Mnuchin's in Bel-Air, police said.

"Who coulda done such a thing", he wrote.

The Secret Service is investigating the incident.

"Yikes! Luckily I have peace of mind and a clean conscience". Late Sunday evening PST, the LAPD did not answer a call to the media phone number listed on its website.
