A woman was airlifted to a Charlotte hospital after a Christmas Eve crash Sunday night on Interstate 77 in Chester County, officials said.

One person, later identified as 71-year-old Stanly Smith, was found dead inside an apartment on the third floor. It took about 24 firefighters to put out the flames.

A child in the vehicle had minor injuries, Agee said.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said the home was "well alight" by the time they got there, but that the fire was contained to just one flat. They said the apartments were either burned or heavily damaged by water.

The family is now being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Fire Marshall, Brad Hall says, people had to jump from top floor windows to escape the smoke and fire, before crews arrived.

The City of Spartanburg, North Spartanburg, Una, Hilltop and Westview Fire Departments responded to the blaze. A joint police and fire investigation is being carried out to establish the cause of the fire.
