Texans GM Rick Smith, coach Bill O'Brien's relationship is 'toxic'

O'Brien has one season remaining on the five-year contract he signed when taking over as head coach of the Texans in 2014.

They will apparently retain him again for 2018, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, who writes that while O'Brien is likely to be back, there are "issues" to be worked out with his contract.

In the statement, Smith said that it was hard decision and that he is grateful for the support of Texans owner Bob McNair and his family, via Amy Palcic from the team's PR staff.

Houston (4-12) lost its final six games of the season and nine of its last 10, prompting speculation there may be a shake-up in the front office, on the coaching staff or both.

It also helps that rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson has openly voices his support for O'Brien.

"That's out of my control, but I would love to have Coach O'Brien with me", Watson said earlier this month. Ever since the draft process, we've been communicating. It's nearly certain that the franchise's front office will take that into consideration when discussing O'Brien's future, as injuries have absolutely had an effect on Houston's lack of success in 2017.

During Smith's tenure, the Texans have made four playoff appearances and won the AFC South on four occasions.

The Texans just could not catch a break this season, but they have the pieces to their fortunes around quickly.
