New Years Eve lows around Branch County are expected to get down to five below with wind chills between five and 15 below zero. Make sure pets are not left outside too long in this cold.

Daytime wind chills will generally be in the single digits to just below zero.

Wind-chill is the perceived decrease in air temperature felt by the body on exposed skin due to the wind. Wind chills in parts of the Upper Peninsula are forecast at between -25 and -30 degrees. The moon will rise after 5:00pm New Year's Day night. Northerly winds of 10-20 m.p.h., will create risky wind chills this morning and tonight while many will be celebrating New Year's Eve.

A surge of Arctic air will push southeast into the region Sunday with a reinforcing shot of cold air Sunday night. The effect of wind chill is to increase the rate of heat loss and reduce any warmer objects to the ambient temperature more quickly.

A wind chill advisory is in place for 9 p.m.
