Fire Department of New York (FDNY) firemen work at an apartment building in the Bronx.

Incidentally, at least 12 people have been killed as a deadly fire engulfed a century old building in the New York's Bronx borough, reports said.

The blaze quickly spread to the upper floors, leaving one person seriously injured while 11 others suffered non-life threatening injuries, officials said.

The blaze began at about 5:30 1547 Commonwealth the Van Nest neighborhood of the Bronx. Nigro said authorities would enter the building to determine the cause of the fire once it's deemed safe.

A fire destroyed a building and injured 23 people in NY yesterday, just days after the city's deadliest inferno in a quarter of a century.

Another resident escaped with her two children and their dog.

WABC-TV reported there were 12 apartments in the building, but the blaze appeared to have started in a furniture store on the first floor.

"They've all been transported, and they will all be ok, thankfully", he said, noting there were at least nine children among the injured.
