Among the injured is Saksham Yadav, who bagged the gold medal for India at the World Weightlifting Championships in 2017.

Locals informed police officials that the auto was being driven at a very high speed and the driver lost control when he was trying to overtake another vehicle and rammed into a roadside pole due to which it overturned.

Police officials suspect over-speeding to be the reason behind the accident.

A Delhi Police official had identified the rest of the dead as Tikamchand, 27, Yogesh, 24, Harish Roy, 20, and Saurabh, 18. While another person identified as Rohit (23) suffered minor injuries and is still recuperating at the hospital.

Meanwhile, it has also come to the fore that the six passengers were celebrating Rohit's birthday and had been drinking alcohol.

Police have registered a case and ordered investigations to ascertain the actual reason behind the accident. Due to severe impact, the car's roof was blown away. "We immediately rushed to the spot and found that one Maruti Swift DZire vehicle bearing number DL 4 CAU 9585 met with an accident near Petrol Pump, while going towards Haryana's Karnal when they were celebrating Rohit's birthday", Gupta told The Indian Express. Yadav was driving the silver Swift DZire on a highway leading to Karnal, Haryana, and crashed around 4am, police said. Two other athletes were injured in the incident and are undergoing treatment at the City's Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh. Families of the deceased players were seen mourning their loss.
