IED Returns To Kashmir, Blast In Sopore Kills 4 Cops

Four Indian policemen were killed on Saturday in a bomb blast set off by suspected militants in Indian-held Kashmir (IHK), police and reports said, marking a deadly start to the new year in the restive valley.

The Jash-e-Mohammed militant group claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the English-language Greater Kashmir newspaper.

The IED blast took place in the market area of Sopore. Soon after the attack army and paramilitary forces launched searches to nab the attackers. She tweeted, "Pained to hear that four policemen have been killed in an IED explosion in Sopore". This is first IED blast since 2015 and indicates to the renewed strategy of terrorists after the revival of JeM outfit. "The Shaheed Afzal Guru squad carried out the attack", he said.


The slain cops were identified as ASI Irshad Ahmad of Doda, Constable Ghulam Nabi Belt of Rafiabad, Constable Parvaiz Ahmad of Handwara and Constable Mohammad Amin of Sogam Kupwara.

A police officer said that the IED went off when a police party was patrolling the Chota Bazar area of main town Sopore this morning. These young policemen were killed when they were on duty to protect the people in the town., Mufti said here. Three shops were damaged in the blast, eyewitnesses said. "May the four fearless J&K police personnel killed in the line of duty today rest in piece".
