The Egyptian shrugged off competition from the 2016 victor Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang who plays for German side Borrusia Dortmund and Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane for the flagship award of the night.

Salah was a joint-top scorer in the 2018 African World Cup Qualifiers after guiding Egypt to their first FIFA World Cup since 1990.

Salah who joined Liverpool from As Roma at the start of the season has scored 17 Premier League goals this term.

"I think we have a good national team and we did very well in the Africa Cup [of Nations], and qualification for the World Cup we did very well", Salah said of his efforts. "I want to dedicate this award to all the kids in Africa and Egypt and tell them never stop dreaming and never stop believing", he went on. "I had wonderful moments at Roma and Liverpool", Salah remarked after receiving the award. The awards ceremony took place on Thursday in Accra, the capital city of Ghana.

Head coach of the Black Stars, James Akawsi Appiah says Mohammed Salah deserves to win the CAF African players of the year award.

He did stand out for Senegal, however, as they secured a first World Cup appearance since 2002, providing much of the creativity in a team stacked with physically formidable footballers.

Mane has failed to match the performances he showed last season. 2017 was an unbelievable year for me.

This comes less than a month after he earned the BBC African Player of the Year award.

"Referees already have their rewards and marks of recognition".
