A man in Stockholm picked up a suspected hand grenade from the ground and it detonated in his hand Sunday, killing him and injuring his companion, Swedish police said.

Police told news agency TT that the killed man, who was in his 60s, and the injured woman, who is in her 40s, were a couple.

Although some media said that the object was a hand grenade, the police have not confirmed that information or the possibility that it was a terrorist act.

Police checked in and around the station after the blast to make sure there were no other explosive devices.

A 45-year-old woman was also hospitalized, but her condition is unknown.

Police cordoned off the station and the square outside as bomb squad experts moved in to investigate. "I don't dare imagine what would have happened if one or several children had found the hand grenade".

"It is too early to say", Mr Olsson said.

The explosion took place outside of the Varby gard station in Huddinge, a southern suburb of the Swedish capital. They added that there were no indications that the incident was related to terror.
